Selective Sound Sensitivity
I’ve recently become quite bothered by particular sounds such as eating, tapping and crinkling wrappers. Particularly eating, which is really starting to strain my interpersonal relationships.
What I think I have is Selective/Soft Sound Sensitivity Syndrome (aka SSSS or 4S), sometimes called misophonia.
So I thought I would share some links!
- SoundSensitive.org – from where I am gathering bits and pieces of information to take to the audiology appointment I have in the beginning of February. =)
- Hyperacusis Network (it also has a Message Board) – generally for hyperacusis, a closely related problem, but there are people with misophonia/4S there too.
- Tinnitis & Hyperacusis Centre – a site by Dr Jonathan Hazell and colleagues, a UK-based expert on similar sound problems.

It can be very difficult but you’ve got to explain to the people around you that you are sensitive, perhaps print off some information about it to give to them so they understand it a little easier and will perhaps be a bit more cautious about eating too loudly.
